Vintage 60’s “Tabak of California” Pucker-Stitch, Slim-Fit Sheath / Wiggle Dress
Size Small to Medium

From the Saltern estate. I’ve never seen fabric quite like this in more than 20 years of collecting and even more years of sewing! (See swatch for detail.)

Simply designed, it has no waist seam, but is “nipped” in. Pair it with a thin belt and dressy jewelry for one look, a chunky vintage belt for a trendier look (neither belt shown included). Long shaping darts at bust, back nylon zipper. Stretches to hug your shape.

Condition: Near mint; no flaws, appears unworn or nearly so.

Fabric: Not labeled; feels like  a finely woven poly or poly/rayon blend.  I would hand wash or dry clean.

Designer & upscale special-occasion apparel along with high-quality pieces designed and priced for everyday wear. Timeless classics for today & tomorrow!

Size: Labeled an 8, but use garment measurements to determine fit. There is stretch to this fabric, and it wants to fit very snugly!

*Measurements:

Bust: 34 to 38

Waist: 28″ to 33″

Hip: 34 to 39

Length: 37" down center back seam

* See our Sizing Tips for how we measure.

On this dress, I’ve measured unstretched to stretched, due to the give in the fabric.

Provenance Note

Many items we will be offering are from the estate of Hollywood apparel designer Irene Saltern. Rather than repeat this note for each item, we will tell you the story here, and state in our descriptions which are from her estate. I do have documents from the estate’s executor verifying this, if you want copies.

Ms. Saltern was a film costume designer in the 30’s & 40’s (favorite designer of dancer Ann Miller and actress Martha Scott). She started designing commercial clothing in the late 40s, and was head designer for Tabak of California, Phil Rose, and others, including her own label. Her apparel and sketches are featured in the collections of the Fashion Institute of Technology and the Los Angeles County Museum. Ms. Saltern is widely credited for pioneering the separates the California sportswear industry was famous for.

I’ve purchased a large collection from her estate and will be offering much of it for sale in the coming weeks and months. Some of these are runway samples, worn only once; some are spec or sample pieces; and some are from her own personal wardrobe, which will feature labels of her own design and other fine makers.  All are constructed with quality, fine materials, and excellent workmanship. Ms. Saltern was meticulous in selecting fabrics, matching & coordinating colors, etc. Her silks and wools are among the finest I’ve ever seen. And her timeless designs, along with their exquisite execution, make them eminently wearable today.

¨ From the Designer’s Own Estate

¨ Body-Hugging Sheath

¨ Pucker-Stitch Crepe Fabric

Another Saltern/Tabak of California design, this skirt suit  is much more fashion forward than the typical suit of its era. Goes great with the black & white shell A delightful fabricsort of a pique' waffle stitch in a diamond pattern (see photo swatches). Note that the weaves are slightly different in each piece; these were likely coordinating separates rather than a matching set, but are so great together, I’ve kept them together. Short jacket is straight, not too boxy, with an angular princess seam down the bustline to the hem, and a 3" seamed, decorative band at the hemline. Falls at or just above the hip line. Slim-fit wiggle skirt has no kick pleat (lining does have a small walking slit for comfortable wear). Narrow set-on waistband, metal back zipper. Both pieces lined in a cotton or cotton blend.

Fabric: Not labeled. My guess is a cotton/poly blend with perhaps a bit of spandex.

Condition: Jacket, excellent; skirt, near mint

Size: Jacket is labeled size 8, and the skirt size 10. However, due to the looser cut of the jacket and the very slim fit of the skirt, these pieces both should fit a modern size Small. Garment measurements below. This fabric does have a bit of diagonal & vertical stretch to it.

Another quality piece from Ms. Saltern's estate. New old stock, unworn. Pristine, it features square neckline, darted bustline, and 6 pearlized buttons in back.

Fabric: Not labeled; a burn test strongly indicates this is a silk/synthetic blend, probably silk/acetate.

Condition: Mint, unworn

Size: Labeled size 8, but see measurements. Meant to be slightly boxy, and may fit a range from about a 6 to 8. This was large on my mannequin, who normally takes about an XS.

*Measurements

Shoulder to Shoulder: 15"

Bust: 36" to 37" (measured around the inside to account for ease, then on the outside to verify; the amount of ease in this gives an approximate measurement rather than exact)

Waist: 32"

Around Hemline: 35" (this will fall a bit above the hip; exactly where depends on your torso length)

Length: 18" down center back seam

Item No.: VC-1182

Price: $75

Shipping: $7.00, U.S. Contact us for cost to other countries.

This lush black velvet dress from Victor Costa is so wearable, not like some of his “over-the-top” looks! Real-woman size, too. Perfect for dinner, cocktails, parties. Valentine’s Day is coming; this is just right for a special night out.

Simple lines till you get to the fabulous tiered, flounced skirt with gorgeous pink satin lining! (You must see the photos!).  It really “makes” this dress. Dress body is semi-fitted; fairly straight & nipped-in at waist, skims the hipline. Buttons up with rhinestone-encircled black buttons.

Fabric: Rayon velvet

Condition: Near mint; I see no flaws other than one tiny dark spot on the lining, which doesn’t show when dress is worn.

Size: Missing its label. Approx. size 12 (large), but may fit a 10/medium. Use garment measurements to determine fit.

* Measurements

Bust: 39½″

Waist: 34¼″ (unfitted, unseamed)

Natural Hip: 41

Dropped Waist at Skirt: 40″

Dress length down center back seam: 39"

Sweet 50’s cotton dress from Alfred Shaheen is different than what you usually see—timeless enough and of a style to wear to work, a party, dinner, etc.  Great for resort or cruise wear. Stunning color—I call it a rich, vibrant ocean blue. Looks more blue or more greenish depending on the lighting.

Features pleated waistline, back nylon zipper with hook & eye, and a fabulous extra-wide slide-buckle belt. The cotton has a smooth hand, with a finish that is somewhat lustrous (not shiny, though). As always with Shaheen apparel, the fabric is high quality. Shown with a crinoline here (not included); can be worn without (see additional photos).

Condition: Near mint; this is almost like new, with the exception that the original thread belt loops are missing, and if you look very closely, you can see the pinpricks in the fabric where they were stitched in. These are not noticeable when the belt is on the dress.  I also think you do not need belt loops with this; it should stay nicely in place.

Size: Not labeled; about a modern small or medium. Could probably fit a lfull-busted size 6 or small-waisted 8. Use garment measurements to determine fit.  The waist dimension is on the “tight” side for a size medium, so be sure to measure your own waist carefully and leave room for fit!

* Measurements

Bust: 38″ (accounting for ease)

Waist: 27/28” (fitted & seamed at natural waistline)

Hip: Full

Bodice length: 16″ (top of shoulder to waist)

Shoulder to shoulder, across back: 16 1/4

Dress length, from shoulder at sleeve seam down side: 39 1/2" (hem is original, but is deep enough to allow this to be lengthened up to about 2

Here’s a very smart late 1940s/early 1950s dress by long-lived design house Abby Kent. Perfect for work, church, luncheons, parties, dinner, etc.  Fabric and  color make it suitable for nearly year-round wear. This is a lightweight taffeta, and, though— due to the beautifully finished seams and darts— there’s no place to take a snip for a burn test, I’m almost positive this is silk. It has a finer hand than acetate and a luster that is normally found only in silk. The skirt and the neckline insets have a polished or glazed finish for crispness, giving that wonderful “swish” when you walk, while the bodice is soft and fluid.

Offers deep scooped neckline with shaped insets and bow, gathers at side/front both sides. Wear with a full or medium-full crinoline for more formal wear, or without for casual wear. The skirt has some natural fullness due to its cut and the crispness of the fabric. (See additional photos.) Shown here with a medium-full crinni, not included. Still has its original belt!

Condition: Excellent,  with a small flaw, a pin-head sized hole in the lower half of the skirt, at the back. Due to its tiny size and the fullness of the skirt, this isn’t noticeable. I’ve treated the edges so it won’t get worse. I will neatly mend this before shipping it, unless you prefer to have me leave it as is. Personally, I would myself wear this as is (even though I can mend it quite nicely).

Size: Not labeled; about a modern “small.” Use garment measurements to determine fit.  The kimono-style sleeves have no seams, so the armpit-to-armpit dimension of the bust is approximate, but the fit of this style of dress has some play in it.
